The Katabami Quartet
The Katabami Quartet focuses on collective improvisation, incorporating a variety of musical settings in their works including electro-acoustic and electronic genres. Other predominating themes which define the Katabami Quartet's sound are Pop Music, 20th Century Classical Music, and Folk/ Americana.
The quartet gained notoriety in the South Florida area and was later invited to give a lecture on the spontaneous interpretation of small amounts of musical material and the exploration of their compositional process at the NUI Maynooth Composition Symposium at St. Patrick's College in Maynooth, Ireland. The quartet was also invited to perform at various venues throughout Europe on tour during the Summer of 2009.
The Trio
The Derek Fairholm Trio, formed in 2008, is a musical collaboration composed of a group of like-minded graduates of the University of Miami's Frost School of Music Jazz Program. The trio features pianist Derek Fairholm, drummer Dag Markhus, and bassist Brian Tate. Originating as the "Katabami Quartet," which features saxophonist Nolan Lem, the new trio's sound lies somewhere between intuition and intellect. The group often performs swinging standards alongside more modern original compositions containing elements of spontaneous construction which add variety to the trio's ever-growing repertoire.
